Curriculum - Geography

Intent

The intention of our Geography curriculum is to develop children’s curiosity and a fascination of the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

By learning about different aspects of the world, we aim to develop our children’s appreciation for diversity and to teach a respect and understanding of what it means to be a positive citizen in a multi-cultural country.

We intend to provide our children with the opportunities to connect with our local environment, capitalising on features of interest and significance in our wider locality, enabling them to build core knowledge and a sense of place.

We aim to promote our children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Our children will also learn to recognise and understand issues concerning the environment and sustainable development and an appreciation of what ‘global citizenship’ means.

We have designed our curriculum to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable, throughout their time at our school; to develop interest and enjoyment of geographical experiences and build confidence and understanding with a strong focus on Global Learning. Geography, by nature, is an investigative subject and through our teaching, we intend to provoke thought, questions and to encourage children to discover answers to their own questions through exploration and research to enable them to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world and their place in it.

“The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.”

President Barack Obama, 2012 National Geographic Bee

“I looked at books, I looked at maps, I looked at atlases, I enjoyed that, but the thing that inspired me most of all was being taken from the school into the local area to look at nature, to look at the way the land looked, to understand the geography, to walk up little hills and streams and see how the ecological system worked, look at the environment.” ~ Michael Palin
