Curriculum - MFL

Intent

We aim to foster both a love of language learning and an understanding of other cultures through our MFL curriculum. The children learn one language throughout KS2, making progress with their language skills throughout the key stage. From the beginning of learning a new language, the children develop their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Language learning requires lots of repetition, but we also ensure progression through our increasing expectations of the children as they develop their linguistic abilities at the following levels:

Year 3 – words     Year 4 – phrases       Year 5 – sentences     Year 6 – texts

The aim of our MFL curriculum is not to teach the children vast quantities of vocabulary, but to make them confident language learners and to give them transferable language learning skills which will enable them to either pursue the same language at secondary school or to learn another language much more quickly and easily. Through language learning, we also help the children develop their understanding of other cultures and their empathy for people from other countries.
